The following excerpt from my good friend, Dr. Heidi Williams. Dr. Williams is a renown plastic surgeon in Charleston, SC.
Greetings on this beautiful Monday!
It seems as though spring (or summer) has sprung early this year. This could be beneficial in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis.
I have attached a link to an article forwarded to me this week (https://www.medpagetoday.com/infectiousdisease/covid19/85596), outlining the potential benefits of Vitamin D.
The article touts the benefits of the sun on the immune system. Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to colon cancer. I thought I'd take a minute to explain that the sun works to boost a person's Vitamin D level.
The sun actually causes a chemical reaction in the skin to give you Vitamin D. You can also get Vitamin D from your diet, though many suffer from Vitamin D deficiency. I am not supporting the idea of ignoring the Shelter in Place orders, currently in effect in Charleston.
I am also not supporting the idea of incurring a sunburn. But today is a great day to get outside while observing social distancing, do some gardening, take the dog for a walk, go for a bike ride, etc.
Some experts suggest spending 10-15 minutes outside without sun protection to boost the body's Vitamin D. I do not think the face should ever be unprotected. Frankly, with the heat and humidity in Charleston, you will probably still get that Vitamin D boost even with full sunscreen coverage since the sun is so strong and we tend to sweat off the sunscreen.
So, don't forget your sunscreen to prevent those damaging burns that can lead to the development of skin cancer, and reapply if you are outdoors for long periods of time!
The outdoors is not only great for your Vitamin D, but your mental health, too, and who doesn't need a little boost on that front these days! And Leah wanted me to pass along a friendly reminder that we are offering a special on all sunscreen products right now, along with free shipping! CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION !
On a totally different note, check out the online music concert tonight as a break from all of the Covid news! iHeart.com/LivingRoomConcert
Have a great day,
